Dr Strange the next Marvel movie?

Yesterday was Stan Lee's birthday and in a interview he said he thinks the next character to get the big screen treatment is-DR. STRANGE. Stephen Strange was a brill ant but arrogant surgeon who had a car accident that crippled his hands. Searching for a way to restore his hands he wondered the world and spent his fortune trying everything. Finally, broken and beaten he heard rumor of a man known as the ancient one who could cure anything. Climbing into the dangerous mountains a snow storm began. Almost dead he was dragged into the caves and met the Ancient One and his student Mordo. The old man refused to help Stephen but the storm made it to dangerous to leave. While wondering about one evening he found Mordou casting a dark spell that was attacking the Ancient One! The spell failed but Strange ran to tell the old man when Mordo cast a spell on him to prevent him from talking about what he saw. Unable to speak about but still free to to speak he asked that he become a student and become a better person. He accepted St range's offer and removed the spell from him. Surprised that the Ancient One knew all about Mordo's treachery he asked why. "At last the spark of good in you has been fanned into a fire. Mordo is a lost cause and has already fled. You are destined to be the new sorcer supreme!"

24 returns

24 returns Sunday Jan 17th with a all new season but should this be the last season? I think maybe its time to let Jack have some peace. He's lost his wife, ruined his health, and been betrayed by the country he loves. How much more could on person take? Don't get me wrong I'm a fan but I think they may have jumped the shark. Let's go out with a bang though and then give this character the happy ending he deserves. I would like to see Jack save the day one more time then walk off into the sunset with his daughter and grandchild smiling for the first time in years.
What do you think?

Golden Age M&M

At the end of WW 2 the Germans took their last top secret project and tried to smuggle it out of the country in a bomber. A EMP device that could have changed the tide of the war. Unfortuntely for them the plane crashed in extreme northern Canada and until now has been trapped in a glacier. However, glaciers sometimes melt and even move. Now the plane has been exposed and it’s a race between the Americans and the Soviets to get there first.

Act 1
Because of the spring thaw the plane has been exposed. To get to it, they need to cross the frozen tundra by dog sled. The Soviets are already on their way under the guise of a scientific research team.

Scene 1
Try to taylor make scenes for each character to get contacted by Major Haws.
Possible scenes- The hero is hunting down bad guys on the bowery. After the fight they get approached by the military to help with a special mission.

Needed- a warehouse full of bad guys. A bunch of high tech military weopns for them to use. Try PL 2 bad guys, PL 5 mob boss, combots PL5, the Ghost PL8. If the fight goes to bad use Dr. Occult to bail them out.

Scene 2
The mission briefing explains how the EMP gun needs to be retrieved. There are Russian super agents involved. They are to defend if needed but are NOT to engage. Both teams are trying to get to the glacier first.

Act 2
They need to make contact with a Brittish scientific team that has set up a research camp in the wilderness. Even with the spring thaw, they can not get a military truck up to the glacier. They need to go by dog sled teams to get there. The Russians also have a sciencetific team as well.

Scene 1
The cabin in the woods.
Major Spencer is in command of the research station. The Russians are preparing to move out with their own team. Neither side has made any hostile actions but both are spying on each other.

Scene 2
Either the American team will sneak up to have a look at the Russian camp or later on the trail at night the Russian supers will attack.

Scene 3 The Glacier
They have to deal with the ice and cold. The plane is stuck 100ft up in the glacier. To get there they need to either fly or make climb checks. The soldiers with them do have rope and a pulley system to lower the device. Even after they get to the plane they have to deal with the traps left behind by the Germans who survived the crash.
Trap number 1.

Bouncing betty trap-PL 5, ref save dc 15 for half, disarm dc 15 disable device, notice dc 15.

The door is missing. They find the pilot and co-pilot’s bodies are in their seats preserved by the cold. The device is missing taken by the survivors to a nearby cave using the door as a makeshift sled. When they get ready to leave the Japanese supers attack.

Scene 4 The Cave

With that the mist envelopes them and the are transported to somewhere else…

Part 1
DEMONS IN THE DARK

Scene 1
A Knowledge check may tell them about Dr. Occult.

They find themselves in the brownstone home of Dr. Occult. The Dr. apologizes and explains hoping that the heroes will help. He is clearly weakened and struggles to explain.
“A recent expedition to Tibet returned a rare teak wooden box. The box had a magical enchantment to contain a powerful demon called a Tulpa. It is a creation of all the negative emotions from the monks given form. Its stay in the box has left it weak but much like a magical disease it has spread to all who were present when the box was opened in the museum. They need to beat all three infected people, gather the energy, and finally trap the demon in the box again.”
Part 2
The museum has been turned into another reality. A nightmarish hell.

Scene 1

Redish coloured skies and a ruined city street is where they find themselves transported to. Burned out, rusty cars. Broken glass windows and gutted out buildings greet them. There is a hot gust of wind that almost knocks them down.
This encounter use the PL8 demons(4) and the Collective PL8.
After the fight a archway appears for them to step through.

Scene 2
Skill challenge. They need to cross a rope bridge without falling off. DC 15 balance check. If they fail DC 15 ref to catch themselves before falling into the darkness.
The landscape before you is dark and rocky. You seem to be near a active volcano as you see a plume of smoke rise into the dim light. The ground shakes beneath your feet in warning.
After crossing the bridge they can make their way into a valley without further checks.
A thick smoky mist obscures your vision. Shadows pass in front of you from time to time letting you know you are not alone.
Use Boils PL8, the Demon Queen PL8, and the Horde. Also include the sorcer PL6.
Again after this fight a portal appears. This one leads to a hedge maze.

Scene 3
To find their way through the hedge maze they need to use survival to keep from getting lost in circles.
After escaping the maze they find themselves in a ruined wheat field. There are locusts feeding on the crops.
Use the Locast PL8 number equal to number of players.
After the fight the final gateway appears.

Scene 3
The group steps through into a huge throne room. Sitting on a chair made of bones rests the Tulpa, a being of pure thought. It is a large creature with dark grey stone like skin. It opens it eyes that glow red with hate. Space seems to warp and twist around it and it appears within striking distance!
To win they must destroy the Tulpa and retrieve the box. When they do, Dr. Occult appears and performs a ritual to again trap in the box before it reforms.

Epilogue
After saving the day Dr. Occult returns them to the docks. He warns the heroes about dark days ahead and the world may call on them again.

Supernatural

This adventure is for 4-6 players although with some adjustments you can play with just 2. Because of the nature of the demon causing the problem the threat level is not that dangerous early on. However the final confrontation can be quite deadly.

General plot.
The hunters are drawn to the small town of Summerberry, Ohio where a recent rash of ghostly sightings have been seen. Strange whispering voices are heard in the graveyard and a ghostly carriage has been seen slowly making its way along the path drawn by a pair of jet black horses. The old hunting cabin on the edge of town deep in the woods has long had a history of the ghost of the hunter who died there who likes to wander the clearing where the cabin burned down. The local fishing hole has always had a legend of the woman who drowned in the pond as a vengeful spirit looking for the man who killed her. There is a mysterious large black hound that wanders around the pond as well. Many say the hound is spirit of the husband who drowned the woman unable to rest.
Legends, superstitions and folklore is all the local Sheriff thinks is going on. Its not until a teenager actually dies at the pond that he decides there is something very real going on. Deputy Sheriff Trevor Burke grew up in town and remembers a old friend that is still heavy into the whole ghost hunting thing. He convinces the Sheriff to call in some friends to poke around.
A teenager named Jon Baker has stolen a grimoire, the Lemegeton Clavicula Salomonis(The lesser key of Solomonis) from the local church. His parents forced him to attend church every week hoping that it would dissuade him from his goth phase. One weekend his parents volunteered him to help Rev Sears move some things. That sat Jon met the Rev and they drove to the old Sears farm house where the old garage was falling apart. After they took a few loads to the church, Jon was allowed a break. Curios, and out of site of the Rev down in the basement, he opened a old footlocker. Inside he discovered a old army uniform, some medals, and a very old book. Grabbing the book he hid it before the Rev came back with drinks and sandwichs. Later on he smuggled the old book out in his backpack.
After studying the book with his friends Barry and Jack they managed to translate a ritual from Hebrew to summon and bind a demon named Oze. Thanks to a mis-transaltion they did not follow the ritual correctly. The demon didn’t actually appear so they think nothing happened. Now the demon is loose and using the town as its personal hunting grounds. It uses its powers of madness and hallucinations to cause fear that it feeds on. The key to banishing the demon is by summoning it again using the ritual into a proper devils trap then performing a exorocism. Barry is the first victum of the demon. They need to find Jon or Jack to track down the book.
There are three reported hauntings so far. The demon wakes up the weak death echos and gives them limited power. They are so weak that they are easily destroyed.

A word about the setting

Summerberry is a fictional town. It could be dropped anywhere there is a small town. It is described vaguely so you can add your own special touch to make it come alive.

The Graveyard.

Strange lights have been spotted here lately. People have reported hearing whispering voices. At night a anomous phone tip reported seeing a ghostly carriage slowly following the path. So far the Sheriff has dismissed it all as nonsense.

Clues: There is a old empty tomb near the bridge that goes over the river. Inside is whats left of the ritual. Black candles, matches, empty beer cans, ciggeret butts, and a improperly made devils’ trap.

Encounter: The demon decides to create a few minor effects to cause fear and madness. Have players make will+disipline saves or they hear whispering voices on the wind and they have -1 step to will saves until they leave the area. Another saving throw or see a hanging man in a nearby tree. In the tomb are cold spots and electronics don’t work.

Read the following out loud:
Not far from the center of town near the river lays the graveyard. There is no fence and only a single dirt road allowing vehicle access. Towards the tree line in the back lays a old wooden shed with a padlock.

If they enter have them roll a alertness or alertness+perception average roll. As they pass they can hear the whispering voices from the graves. When they reach the tool shed read the following.

The padlock is broken. The whispering voices grow harsher as you approach.

Have them make another alertness+perception average roll. There is a path leading down towards the river. A success lets them notice old tomb. Next call for a will+discipline hard test. The lowest sees a hanging figure in the trees.

Swaying back and forth in the breeze you see a figure hanging by a rope in a nearby oak tree. When you look closer you realize its you! Suddenly the other you opens its eyes and stares at you!

Have the player make a fear check using will+discipline hard. If they arrive at night use the ghostly carriage encounter instead.

You hear the clip clop sound of horses from the entrance to the graveyard. When you turn around there is a wagon driven by a black clocked figure. In the flatbed wagon are bodies stacked high. Boney white hands crack the whip and the wagon charges towards you!

First have them make a will+discipline/reistance or will+disipline hard roll. Any who fail have a -1 step to will saves. They can make a agility+atheletics average check to roll out of the way. The carriage fades away and does no real damage either way. After using one of these encounters they will most likely approach the unknown tomb.

The small tomb seems very out of place here. You had to follow a well worn path halfway down to a old rusty metal bridge. The opening faces the river and is wide open with no sign of the door. There is no family name carved on the small building. Only darkness and a musty smell greets you.

When they decide to shine a light inside read the following.

Except for crushed beer cans, fast food wrappers, and cigarette butts the inside is mostly empty. You can see a lot of foot traffic in here. There is a lot of graffiti on the walls but one in particular catches your eye. On the back wall in dark red is a familiar sign.

Intelligence+Lore average roll will identify the symbol as a devils trap. A alertness+perception hard roll will notice the that something is not right about the trap. A second Int+Lore roll will tell them that the trap is done incorrectly. There are also several black candles (no roll necessary). With a successful alertness+perception hard roll or if they search int+perception/investigation average roll they will find a church flyer for their yearly carnival. On the back are several crude drawings of the devils trap as if someone were trying to practice it correctly before painting it on the wall.

The Church

Pg 170. Father Francis Sears here most of the day. If they arrive during the day he will be found working in his small vegitable garden. If at night he is inside and can be found replacing candles.
Some of the more likely questions asked are:
Do you believe in any of the hauntings?
All things are possible. However, in the past I have always dismissed these stories as just that-stories.

Do you know anything about the unmarked tomb?
It was built by a family who was going to use it back in the 1800’s. Unfotuntely, the town had a flood and the land by the river was changed. Now its low and other graves were washed away. I wish I knew more but a lot of records were lost that year as well.

Do you know what is going on there now?
Sadly, a lot of misguided teens use it to smoke and drink. I talk and talk but they just come back when I’m not around.

Did you know about the boy who drowned?
I know everyone in town. Barry Rogers was one of my more…troubled charges. He was best friends with Jon Decker and Jack Monroe. They were always together until Jon’s parents grounded him for drinking.

Where can we reach the two boys?
Well, I can give phone numbers and addresses for both.

Rankins Pond

There has been a long history surrounding the pond about a woman who drowned here. Its been said that she was actually murdered by her husband for the money that was left to her. Its been said that he had a large black hound he kept as a pet. The dog is sometimes heard but seldom seen. The ghost of the woman is spotted and tries to lure men to the pond to come join her.

Clues: The fact that there is no body in the pond is in itself a clue. The story is completely false.

Encounters: The ghost appears as a drowned woman calling out for her lost love. Choose one character with the best charisma they see her as she was in life-beautiful. If the one she chooses fails a will save he is compelled to head to the water. The black dog will howl in the distance first announcing its arrival.

Read the following when the approach the pond.

To get to the pond you have to follow the trail along the tracks. It sits behind the old lumber mill. As you approach you can hear the hum of insects and somewhere a splash from fish jumping.

Have players make a will+perception Easy roll. Highest hears woman’s voice calling them to the water’s edge. Have target player roll a Will+Discipline/reistance Formidable roll. Now the player is compelled to walk into the water and will drown if not stopped. The effect ends if they take him away from the area. If they go at night they will also encounter the large black hound. If they do read the following.

The woods surrounding the pond are strangely quiet. The clouds part as you approach the waters edge revealing a full moon. Mist dances across the waters surface and strange shadows keep you on edge. Out of the dark comes a howl! Across the pond a huge black hound charges across the surface of the water its eyes glowing yellow.

Roll inititive. This is not an illusion but a transformed Jack. Pg 155 use the wolf stats.

If they search around the pond they may find the tracks of Jack that turn into large dog tracks. Alertness+survival Average roll. This may lead to them to a fight with the dog during the day in the woods.

The cabin in the woods

The old hunting cabin caught fire years ago during a thunder storm when lighting struck it. Legend has it that a hunter died in the fire and haunts the clearing where the burned out cabin is. The building is still there but the roof is gone and the walls are falling apart. There are dead plants surrounding the cabin. Poking around they find empty beer cans and other recent garbage.

Clues: If the person who died here was burned in the fire there should not be a ghost. There is a record of a man dying in the fire. His few remains were cremated at the towns expense and they can visit his grave.

Encounters: A supernatural force will attack a random person when they enter the burned out wreck of the cabin. That person is whisked away into the air and thrown out of the clearing. Then the ghost of the angry hunter appears, shotgun in hand. They can get there by parking and then walking for a mile on the foot path. Day or night they have the same encounter.

A storm seems to be moving as you feel the first drop of rain. Ahead there is a large clearing and in the center is a burned out cabin with little left but the frame. The air grows still as you approach and the birds stop singing.

Aletness+perception Average roll.

Something odd catches your eye. All plants and grass has all died in a circle around the cabin.

Entering the cabin triggers the ghost appearing with the shotgun. The demon uses its tk ability to attack anyone standing in the clearing.

A man in hunting camoflauge appears and raises his shotgun taking aim at you.
“This is my hunting grounds! I’ll kill you all!” he screams.

Have them roll initive. Then have the demon attack using tk power to cause trouble. After they fight the ghost the demon leaves. All that’s here is recent garbage and empty beer cans.

Jack Monroe’s home

If they go to visit Jack they find the sheriff there already. It seems that Jack went fishing last night. The pond is not far from his home and she trusts him to come home on his own. When she woke up this morning Jack was not in his bed. If they think to go later in the day and the Deputy character is being played everyone is searching the area for the missing Jack. If no one is playing the deputy he will call them and inform them of the disappearance. Either way, someone claimed to have seen the large black hound last and a bit of a drunk. Will+Influence/Persuasion or Will+Persuasion/Intimidation or Will+Perception/Empathy Hard roll needed to get answers from her.

Jon’s home

On the outskirts of town down some very bad roads is Jon’s home. When they approach they see its seen better days. The grass is uncut, the gutters are full, the screen door to the porch is hanging by a thread.

Jon’s parents are dead. Their bodies are in the living room. It looks like a murder suicide. A Int+Perception/Investigation Average roll to determine that the husband shot first the wife then himself. Int+Guns/Shotgun easy roll will tell the gun was a 12 gauge.

Jon is in his bedroom in the back of the house. He has been driven quite mad by the demon when he saw the ghost in the pond lure Barry to his death and transformed Jack into the wolf like dog. He ran for his life that night. When he got home his parents were not home. When they did come home they found Jon crying in his room. They couldn’t talk to him so they were going to call the doctor thinking he was hurt but the demon showed up, posossed the father, shot the the mother, then shot the father. The demon has been enjoying mocking poor Jon ever since then whenever it wasn’t out finding other victums to scare.

A Will+Influence/Intimidation or Will+Influence/Persuasion formidable or Will+Perception/Empathy. This to convince Jon to put down the gun. The players can use a team effort to calm him.
Jon’s story- He stole the book from the Church. Barry being Jewish managed to help translate enough of the Grimare to summon a demon named Oze. They failed to make the devils trap properly and (unknowingly) set it free. At first nothing all that strange happened. They thought they failed, not that any of them took the whole thing that serious anyway. At first there was the little things happening at the graveyard and they began to wonder. They heard the stories but still laughed it off. On the second day they all went to Rankings pond to smoke and hang out. When the spirit called to Barry he drowned and then the demon changed Jack into the dog when he tried to save Barry. Jon ran in fear and has been missing school since. Jon has the book needed to summon the demon and the proper ward to contain it. After that, they have to perform a excersism.

First they need to make a proper devils trap Int+Lore or int+lore/demons or int+lore/superstitutions average roll. Then they need to translate the text to summon the demon int+know/linguistics average roll. To perform ritual roll will+lore or will+lore/superstitutions average roll.To send the demon back have them roll will+lore/demons a hard extended test of 55.

Even after they summon it they still have to contend with its powers that will play on their fears. Oze will use its mind control on Jon to try to get him to either attack the players or break the circle so he can posses him.

Oze, demon of hallucinations, madness and shapechanging.
Agi d8 Str d12 Vit d10 Ale d8 Int d12 + 12 Will d12
Init d8 + d8 LP 22
Attacks: Oze prefers to use its mind control power to cause madness and turn people against each other.
Mind control d6, limted to causing hallucintions only. Will + Influence/Persusion + Mind control trait vs the hunter’s Willpower + Discipline/Resistance.

Telekinesis d8 you can use this power on two targets at the same time. Range 50ft, roll Attribute+Skill+Telekinesis Trait die. Characters use only mental Attributes to resist.

Conclusion

If they manage to win and send Oze back to hell they need a good cover story for the strange events. The Sheriff will be grateful but will hint that they need to leave town soon. Poor Jon will spend the rest of his days in a mental institute if he lives. Now they must decide what to do with a dangerous book.

Hawkman the movie?

You read right! DC comics has writers working on the script now. From what they said it sounds like they are going with the original non-alien version. So we will most likely be seeing the re-incarnated Egyption prince story. I guess the whole alien world setting would be way to pricey. The only Hawkman villan I know of is the gentleman ghost. I'm betting though it will be some Egyption cult rising up in modern times that he has to stop.

This weeks comics

*WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD*

Captain America one shot:Who will wield the shield?
Marvel kinda dropped the ball by delaying the Return first. Its a little confusing because this book is SUPPOSED to follow the final issue of the return. Anyway who gets the shield? Apparently Steve caught a glimpse of the future and thinks that if Bucky stops being Cap he will die!(why? we need the final issue of the Return to understand this). He does not tell Bucky but uses a excuse of he is not ready to be Cap again. The president pardons Steve and hints that he needs him to do something else in the coming storm. Thus begins the Siege.

On writing

Its a strange thing I noticed while being a part of this writing marathon this month. Now whenever I pick up a book I have become so much aware of every word. Every sentence.I find myself critiquing as I read. Its a odd sensation. Normally I just get lost in a good book. It reminds me of a music course I took in college. I learned about the style of music. I never heard a song the same way again as I always break it down into its many parts. I think I have gained a greater appreciation for writing.

Untitled sample of new book

Its strange the things you think of while dying. I mean, this is my second time and again all I can think of is how much I want to see the ocean one more time. The world is about to end, reality is undoing itself and I’m belly aching about one last swim.
I look up and see the billboard at the center of Whispering Pines, a nice place to live. Sighing I try to pull myself up to a sitting position and it feels like I broke some ribs. Somewhere in the distance I can hear Charles. He’s coming back to finish me off. My only regret is that I didn’t stop this when I had the chance. To whoever hears this, I’m sorry. If I tell everything maybe the next world can save itself.

I always loved Paris. As a teen I came here with the French club as a senior trip. I spoke just enough to get by. I loved to sit at these little cafes watching people. I was so lost in thought that I didn’t pay attention when an old friend pulled up a chair.
“Hello Simon. Its been a while.” Carter said.
I took another sip of my coffee and gestured to the waiter to come over.
“I’ll buy.” I replied. “What brings you here?”
“The same thing that brings you here. Something is trying to break through. Its using the energy from the ley line that runs right through the city.”
“The Keepers think I need help?” I asked.
Carter ordered a drink and smiled politely to waiter. I had an uneasy feeling that something big was going down. Carter taught me everything about magic and all the rules of being a Watcher. My old teacher being here and away from his students made things important. Somewhere thunder rumbled.
“Energy is starting to build. So much for enjoying that drink. I’ll keep a eye out for any innocents and keep them out of the way. Let’s see what you got kid.” Carter said.
I stood up just as the rain started. I slipped into my trench coat, adjusted my tie, and put on my fedora to keep my head dry.
“You know, it’s the 2000’s now. You could ditch the Bogart look.” Carter chided.
“Never mess with the classics I always say. Here’s looking at you kid.” I quipped.
Its amazing how easy it was falling back into working with my old mentor. Without any words we set out just like old times. Carter began by moving out onto the street and began to focus his energies on weaving a powerful illusion as reality began to warp. Very few would be able to see what was about to happen. If by any chance there was someone gifted with the sight we would erase their memories afterwards.
I turned myself around and made my way to the fountain where I sensed the entity earlier. My best guess was that a water spirit was about to show itself. Very primitive creatures so I was pretty sure I could outsmart it and send it back to where it belongs. These creatures tend to be chaotic little shits that exist to just cause havoc and destruction.
The rain turned into a down pour as I focused my senses trying find some psychic trail of the creature. I was intent on watching the fountain which is my excuse for missing the manhole cover to the sewers that slid open the noise drowned out by the poring rain and thunder. I felt something grab my right ankle and pulled me hard enough that I hit the ground with a bone shaking thump. The water tentacle began to drag me to the opening as I struggled to clear my head. I couldn’t concentrate to summon any magic so I reached for the iron dagger tucked away in my belt. I barely gripped the hilt when I got dragged down into the water with a splash. Luckily it wasn’t deep just disgusting.
I shook it off feeling bruised and sore. My eyes began to adjust to the darkness when I heard the water splash. I turned to see a vaguely human shape formed out of the water rise up. Before it could slam into me I drew forth the Celtic iron dagger and the runes flared to with an eerie blue light. The creature recoiled out of fear.
“That’s right. Fey creatures can’t stand cold iron can you?”
Using the dagger gave just enough time to clear my head. With my left hand I made a binding gesture and black bands of energy erupted beneath the water forming a shell to contain it. It was a good thing I was close to the ley line running through the city. I began to utter ancient words of power to open a portal to send the thing back home and the energy exploded out of control. Instead of a window I got a hole big enough for a bus to drive through. Being from that realm the water spirit was naturally drawn back in.
I found myself with a real problem. I had to close this rip in reality before something more dangerous found a way through. Still, just for a moment, I stared into a world of incredible beauty. The sunshine was so bright it was blinding. The forest was filled with large oaks and there was a crystal clear lake near the opening. I forgot just how hypnotic the fey realm could be.
I shook it off and began to summon a weaving spell and found it took all my energy. It wasn’t that I was weak but the energy bleeding through was powerful. It was as if the walls between realities was growing weaker. I could see the energy patterns in flux. I could only wonder what would do such a thing. Now I was sure I knew why Carter was here. To warn me.
Dripping wet I crawled my way out of the muck. I was grateful that it was still raining in a steady pattern. It helped to wash of the smell.
“Well. I could make a joke but this is too easy.” Carter said.
“Anyone nearby?” I asked
When he shook his head no I stood up and used a little magic to clean my self up. Carter gestured for me to follow. I could see the energy line leading to a node. He pulled open an old wooden door and we stepped through to the Keepers city at the entrance of the great library.
I never cease to marvel at the ancient stone making up the city. I tried to ask different teachers and could never get a straight answer on the age of this place. All I ever got was that the Keepers built it to teach those who want a second chance at life that there is so much more to what we perceive as reality. Some become teachers in the way of magic, some like me become Watchers trying to keep things together for another day. Always keeping an eye out for the fabric of the real world showing signs of weakness. Only people gifted with the sight ever catch a glimpse of the true nature of the world. Many are driven mad by what they see.
I followed Carter up the stone steps to the large double wooden doors of the library. He led me down into the basements to his old office. Books, manuscripts, and odd statues decorated the small room.
“Still a paper slob?” I teased. “How the hell do you find anything in this mess?”
Carter moved a stack of old scrolls of a chair for me to sit. I wrinkled my nose at the smell of moldy paper and sat down. He sat down behind the desk in that old duct taped chair he refused to replace.
“Something we can’t identify is trying to break through.” Carter said.
From the matter of fact way he said it I knew it was something big.
“We can’t get a bead on it. Whatever it is its subtle. Flittering in and out reality. Tearing down a wall here or using some pore fool to summon things into the world to cause trouble. You sensed some of its power down there in the sewer didn’t you?” he asked.
“Something made the walls paper thin. Its as if something peeling back the layers making it easier for things to get through. Is this happening everywhere on earth?” I asked.
“Everywhere.” He replied.
Usually magic has a distinct signature. Like different ‘flavors’. It’s a way to identify where it came from or from whom. In order to mask it something very powerful must be behind it. Something to give even the Keepers of Order a run for their money.
“Has anyone talked to the Keepers?” I asked.
“We’re on own. Someone went to the chamber and lit the fires but they are not answering.” Carter said.
“What the hell? I know how enigmatic they can be with their answers rapped in riddles but not responding at all?” I said shocked. “I have half a mind to march down there myself!”
“Wow! You know better. Just calm down we have to pull together on this one. I have every available agent working on this.”
I did know better. I heard of one person who ignored the dangers and dared to look at the Keepers. His mind could not comprehend what he saw. The last I heard he was locked up in a mental institution on earth.
“Where do we start?” I asked.

Why Januarury is too cool

Why? For the first time ever there is a cluster of movies coming out in the coldest month if the year. Avoid Case 39I heard bad news on that one. However, check out the following-Day Breakers, Book of Eli, and Legion. All of them about the end of humanity! I will review all of them as I go to see them. I recently got laid off(today) and have plenty of time.

JSA on Smallvill

Friday Jan 29 don't miss the JSA movie! Go mark it on your calendar.

Captain America the Movie

Things were supposed to be moving on this project in Oct. I have yet to hear anything new. I am a die hard cap fan so you know I will be watching this like a Hawk. My pick for cap is Jenson Ackles(Dean Winchester on Supernatural) but then I saw Avatar and the main character sure could pull of Steve Rogers(in fact he said he is a cap fan but has not been approached). At first my concern was they were throwing out big star names all of who were 40 + and that was just bad. The origin thing has come up a few times. First movies can waste a huge part of the movie on it. The problem? You bore long time fans who already know every version ever told. However, some people have been living on Mars and need to be told the origin. I say show the origin in a old news reel fashion with the opening credits. How cool would that be? Then lets get on with it! I love the Winter Soldier but Bucky would look awful on screen. Who to play the Red Skull? Hmmm.

Spider Man 4 rumors

The rumor is that Spider Man 4 is on break because Rami and Marvel can not agree on the main villain. Sam wants the Vulture which does lend itself to his dark creepy directing style. Damage control claims that production is shut down because of Christmas. I wanted the Lizard because I mean isn't that what they have been setting up for 3 movies now? Come on! Sigh. I guess what it the problem is popularity. The Vulture NEVER had a strong following. Personally I like the Curt Conners(the Lizard) because Peter is friends so Spider Man always holds back for fear of really hurting the good guy within. Also again, it suits Sam's style. Running through the sewers and dark alleyways. After the Venom mess I am loosing hope. Why not leave it to the fans to vote on?

Nowhere Man excerpt

The problem with immortality was that you grew bored. You also tended to obsess over your favorite subject. For some it was music or art. For Prefect Collen it was science. Specifically, astronomy- for he was to be forever denied the daylight he had become fascinated by the stars. There had been a time when no one wanted the isolated job of this observatory. For Collen it was the perfect job. Night after night he would make a mundane report to satisfy his superiors on the stasis of the aging satellites in orbit and the rest was his time to study the stars.

So, like every other night he sat in his comfortable chair letting the computers auto adjust the giant telescope to track the orbits of the various left over satellites and debris in orbit. Collen had just started to relax when an alarm went off. Something was falling! He quickly ran to the eyepiece to look. Whatever was falling seemed to be slowing its fall by firing rockets. No sat would act like that, so it had to be a ship? He quickly began to check sensors hoping for more information. Whatever it was it began to fly erratically and its trajectory was going to land it not far, out in the desert. Quickly, Collen filed a quick report and rushed to his vehicle. Almost as an after thought he grabbed some equipment to take readings in case there was anything radioactive.

Kyle found himself sitting at a desk in a class room that reminded him of the biology building at the community college he attended. The cement floor meant he was in one of the basement classes. There was an old metal desk in front and a movable chalkboard. Kyle heard the rustle of paper and looked to his left where his brother John sat. Why did he not notice him until now he wondered?

John turned another page on the newspaper he was reading, while whistling a tune. Kyle tried to read the page but it was just a jumbled mess. Worse, he realized John was much younger than he should be.

“Hey little brother”, John said without setting the paper down,” I suppose you are a little confused. Relax, the class is about to start.”

“I’m dreaming, right?”

John folded up the paper, grinned and pointed to the chalk board. In the middle of the board was a video of a man in a hospital bed connected to a respotor. Kyle, shocked recognized the man as himself. Turning back to look at John he found another surprise. His brother was middle aged, graying at the temples, and wearing bi-focles. Exactly the way Kyle remembered.

“What is this nonsense John?!?,” Kyle demanded.

“Ahem”, a voice from the front of the class spoke”Perhaps I can help. You can call me professor Marty.”

A short man with neatly trimmed grey hair and a bright red tie stood in front of the old desk. A briefcase hung lazily from his right hand as he slouched leaning against the wall. Setting down the case he turned to the chalk board and began to write. The words were just as confusing to Kyle like everything else in the dream. The man turned to face them.

“Gentlemen, welcome to my lecture on the origins of mankind and the impact of extreterristal influence of the species. We shall explore the possible effects and evnvirlmental impact of an outside alien race having visited this planet. For instance- in Peru we have the Nazca symbols. When seen on the ground, they appear to be nothing more than strange lines carved into the dry desert. However, when seen from high above-such as say, a small plane- they appear as intricate animal drawings. How is it possible that they did something so complicated as these huge symbols that can only be seen from so far above? Why?”

The man who called himself Professor Marty opened his briefcase and pulled out several colored photos.

“As you can see” he paused while passing the pictures to Kyle” here are some various pictures of the so called “pyramids” of Mars. An optical illusion or actual signs of an intelligent alien race? I could go on and on with various stories. A tribe in Africa that worshipped a dark star centuries ago that was only discovered with modern telescopes or the legend of Atlantis and its wonders-all very fascinating but none of these have any solid proof. Of course, there are thousands of UFO sightings across the world; some would say some of these must have SOME truth to them. Did we have contact with alien visitors and did they influence our culture, history or our very evolution on a genetic level?”

Kyle sat quietly amused at the entire speech. It reminded him of one of Johns science projects that he was always so proud of. John was forever studying the stars and was fascinated with the concept of other life in the universe. His brother was always so much smarter than him, older and –because he was Kyle’s half brother- he always felt more spoiled than him.

“So, I’m to believe, that an alien species has used the earth as what? - giant science experiment? Maybe little green men are among us” Kyle’s voice dripped with sarcasm” and that they are the reason we moved out of our trees?”

Marty stared at Kyle with daggers in his eyes.

“Young man” Marty finally spoke”I am sorry for what we did.”

An alarm rang out demanding attention. Confused, Kyle covered his ears as the sound intensified. The lights dimmed and the room shaked.

“We’re out of time little brother”John yelled over the din. “Time to wake up you’re about to crash!”

Before Kyle could respond everything went dark.

Jack new he was in trouble. Sarah would kill him when she found out that he ignored a direct order. He sat in the dark room, lit only by the rows of computer monitors supplying an eerie green light. He began to do busy work to keep his mind off it. He crawled under the desk checking connections, went through stacks of boxes lining the metal shelves taking inventory of all the electronic components.

This was not the first time Jack made this mistake. Last time he hacked into an old army base’s mainframe. It took him weeks to sort through the tons of files both mundane and those marked top secret. Old tech was very much in demand on the black market what with the strict control on new tech. At first it seemed perfect. Unfortunately, the person he contacted to sell the goods to was an elder undercover agent. Jack was lucky to escape with his skin intact. He knew someone who got caught and was re-educated for it. She was so brainwashed that she wandered into the waste lands and was never heard from again. Jack suppressed a shudder and focused on his work.

“Jack, how do you ever find anything in this maze of wires and garbage?”

Jack froze under a desk where he had been checking connections. Without turning he replied.

“Sara, sugar, you got here fast! Be with just a minute.” He replied with a nervous voice.

Jack crawled from under the table and instead of getting up, decided to sit on the floor. He pushed a long strand of blond hair out of his eyes, sighed and looked directly at Sara.

“So, what, are you planning my punishment already? “he asked. “I mean, I was just monitoring old satellites like you asked. Honest, I didn’t invite trouble this time.”

Without a word, Sara rose from the chair and glided behind it. She patted the chair back to gesture for him to sit. When Jack did not get up she grinned a crooked smile.

“Jack, Jack. What am I to do with you? I won’t bite, honest. I’m not mad, just concerned about our little hideaway here being compromised. Just tell me what happened and if we need help, we can call on some of your protégés to help. Now sit” she said with authority.

Sheepishly, Jack got up and plopped down in the chair. Sara stepped back, then with cat like grace, leapt onto a nearby crate, and sat cross legged.

“Right,” Jack said as he moved closer to the key board”lets see what I can show you.”

His fingers danced across the keys as various images of satellite orbits showed up on the monitors. On a different screen pictures of the satellites flashed by.

“None of these match the signal I picked up. I can’t id this thing. NASA, NSA, CIA, not even anything the elders have ever been working on. Whatever it was it was a big secret. Now,” he paused to pull up another picture,”you can see I worked out where it came from based on its angle of descent and speed. Watch the little dot trace its way to the crash site. BOOM! Ah, but wait. I have a video of the object as it moved.”

Sara watched a grainy night time video of a light in the sky as it fell. At times it looked like it slowed or shifted. Almost as if it was trying to slow its fall. Jack then paused it and pointed to the object.

“Now look here. Watch carefully or you will miss it Sara.”

She watched intently as he hit the play button. There was a burst of light that separated from the main object. It was smaller and quickly grew dimmer.

“What the hell was that!?” she whispered.

“My best guest-someone or something ejected when they lost control. You saw how it kept adjusting itself? Well, a computer program, even an old one, could certainly handle it. I mean, I don’t want to get to excited, it could be nothing more than some old NASA secret project that was kept off books just following its programming.”

“Come on Jack,” she grinned “you wouldn’t have bothered me if you thought that’s all it was. You are holding back. What did you do? I promise, no punishment if you talk now.”

Jack paused, not sure if she really meant it. He stared for what seemed like an eternity at the monitors in front of him. Finally he took a deep breath; let it out and without turning to look at Sara in the eye he pulled up another image on another screen. Numbers appeared ran the length of the monitor and began to scroll non-stop. She recognized computer code and, with her limited understanding, new it was a program running.

“So, there I was, like a kid in a candy store. All these juicy files to sort through and the next thing I knew,” Jack pointed at the code “BAM! Something got through my firewall. I mean, like a run away train, it was in our system. It’s still running but I managed to isolate it for study. So far I only got one bit of information and it has me scared like a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.”

Jack stood up, pushed a button and gestured to yet another screen. On it was three words that stunned Sara.

THANK YOU JACK

“Now do you understand why I called you down here into this pit?”

Kyle woke up to almost total darkness. There was a flashing red light and an alarm going off. He found himself strapped into a chair, looking at a small monitor, with everything shaking violently. Panic gripped like a vise as he struggled against the restraints, searching in vain for a release. He could feel pressure building up as his ears popped. Before he could do anything else, there was a loud explosion that almost left him deaf. The alarm that was demanding attention was now drowned out but the sound of rushing wind and he could feel the frigid cold air. A second smaller explosion revealed a night sky full of stars. Kyle only had a moment to try to understand what was happening when he found his chair ripped free from the small room he was in and thrown out so fast that he felt his bones ache.

The cool night air helped wake him up more. Kyle couldn’t move and forced his eyes close trying to not get sick from the spinning stars overhead. Away from all the noise he could hear the subtle rustle of cloth in the wind. Opening his eyes again he found attached to the strap by his head was a flashing red light. He braced his nauseated stomach and looked up to see what he could only guess was a parachute.

God please let this just be a dream within a dream.

Kyle’s head fell limp against the parachute strap as he felt weakness envelope his body. He tried but could not move as his eyes closed again. The impact shook him out of his semi-conscious state. He didn’t know how long he just laid there under the parachute, sitting in the chair, trying to find the strength to move without throwing up. The flashing red light gave him just enough to see the release button on the side of the chair to get free. He rolled out of the chair and cursed as his knee fell on a small rock. Kyle untangled himself from the cloth and tried to look around as his eyes adjusted to the darkness.

From what little he saw, Kyle could tell it was a desert. There was little more than dry brush and sand. However, right at the edge of his vision he saw a large rock big enough to sit on. He stood a little too fast and was hit by a wave of dizziness and nausea. Determined he convinced himself to take that first step and stumbled over a metal box. As Kyle laid there on the sand cursing himself, he felt his temperature rise and weakness flowed over him again. Not able to fight it anymore he began to retch and vomit. After several minutes passed he felt a wave of coolness wash over him and the night air flowed passed him making him shiver. It was then he felt something on his forehead and reached up to touch the spot. His hand came back with half dried tacky blood. He also felt pain on his right hip and rolled over to try to look. Sure enough, there was a tear in the dark blue jump suit he was wearing. The blood had fortunately clotted there as well and he hoped it was not as bad as it looked.

Next he spotted what he tripped over. It looked like it was something that fell loose on impact. So he shifted it around and found the latch to open it and inside he found a few water bottles, some energy bars, a flare gun, a flashlight, a Swiss army knife and a small plastic box with the Red Cross symbol on it.

Finally a little luck, god knows I could use a little. Now if I can just clean my wounds without getting sick again. Maybe there is something in here for my stomach.

Kyle sat on the cold sand and began to clean his wounds. It looked like mostly scrapes. When he went to bandage his forehead he realized that he was completely bald! Gone was his thick black hair. He quickly took stock of everything else by unzipping the jump suit and stripping down to the shorts and t-shirt he was wearing. He felt cold and ridiculous so he quickly gave himself a look for more injuries. Kyle was surprised to find that he lost weight. He was also relieved that he had no other injuries so he quickly got dressed.

Kyle felt shaky but focused on the large rock. He slowly gathered his supplies, turned on the flashlight and one foot in front of the other walked to his new resting place. He popped some tablets for an upset stomach and followed it up with some aspirin. Whatever was in the water bottles it was more than water. It seemed to have a mild lemon flavor and he found he was far thirstier than he thought as he quickly finished the first one. It was then that he heard the noise.

It was the sound of an engine that much Kyle was sure of. He decided to shut off his flashlight and focused in the direction of the sound. He could see a vehicle of some sort headed his way. A wave of relief washed over him. Then he remembered the flashlight and tried to use it to signal whoever it was. Kyle smiled ear to ear when, sure enough, the large metal vehicle changed course to barrel directly to him.

“Wa-Hoo! “ Kyle yelled out. “Come to poppa!”

The vehicle looked almost tank like with the tire treads to match. It had a narrow, single, slit for a window and the metal outer shell was polished Kyle guessed from the sand. Just as he rose up, bright lights flared on leaving him blind. Why this guy was driving without lights to began with seemed strange.

“Hey easy there pal, I come in peace!” Kyle yelled over the noisy engine.

In response the engine shut down but the lights remained on. Then he heard the hiss of air as a door opened on the left side. Kyle could see a tall figure step out, someone taller than him by at least half a foot and Kyle new he was almost six foot tall himself. He tried to get a better look but his eyes still had not adjusted.

“Who are you?” whispered the stranger.

“Kyle,” he answered “I seem to be a bit lost, Mr.-“

“You may call me Collen.” He replied.

The man stepped forward and paused in mid stride. His head tilted to the side, his eyes closed and Kyle swore the man sniffed at the air.

“You are injured” he stated “you are bleeding.”

“Well, not anymore. I stopped the bleeding, lucky for me there was a first aid kit and a few other necessities.”

The man called Collen stepped forward again measuring each step. Kyle could see the man was not only tall but thin and bald. Something about the way the man moved as if he did not waste movement almost cat like, that made him step back to his rock.

“I can hear your heartbeat and smell your fear. YOU ARE HUMAN!” the man shrieked.

With a single powerful leap the man crossed the divide between him and Kyle, pinning him down on the rock. Kyle panicked trying to fight back as the man’s jaw opened almost wide enough to envelope his head. Rows of razor sharp pointed teeth came closer as he strained to break free. Over powered Kyle felt fangs sink into his throat and his blood began to flow from the wound.

Without warning the stranger released him, staggered back and howled in pain like a wounded animal. Kyle quickly grabbed his neck to staunch the blood from gushing out.

“Your blood burns! What have you done to me?” he screeched.

“What did I do to you?!?” Kyle screamed back. “YOU BIT ME YOU FREAK!”

Kyle began to scramble around looking for the first aid kit. In his haste he dumped the entire box of supplies out onto the ground. Quickly he applied a bandage and wrapped gaze around his neck. He could hear the man behind him screaming and rolling around on the ground. When he turned to look he saw blue veins forming across the man’s face and neck looking fit to burst. Dark liquid began to flow from the creature’s eyes, nose and ears as he rose to his feet.

“Son-of-a bitch,” Kyle cursed, “you have got to be kidding me.”

Moving quickly, Kyle new what he had to do. As fast as he could, hands shaking, he found what he was looking for. When he rolled back up he had the flare gun in his hand, aimed, and fired. The shot buried itself deep in the man’s chest, bright red and burning. It quickly caught his clothes on fire. Screaming the man ran back to his vehicle flames trailing behind him.

“Oh no,” Kyle muttered, “That can’t be good.”

Some sort of hissing sound came from the interior as Kyle re-loaded the flare gun, then he could see white foam pouring out of the door. He waited, rooted to the spot scared. After long moments a figure covered in white foam staggered out, gestured in Kyle’s direction, than collapsed still smoldering. The smell of the burnt corpse began to make him wretch again. Somehow he managed to keep it down this time. For long moments he sat on the rock catching his breath. Kyle new what he had to do next and had seen enough horror movies to know it was always a classic mistake. Slowly he rose from his perch, sighed and lurched towards the body alert for any sudden movement.

“Ugh. Well there stinky, it looks like you are having a bad day.” Kyle joked.

Moving around the body he used his flashlight to peak inside the vehicle. Foam was everywhere and smoke obscured Kyle’s line of site. Still, he could see two seats and a control panel. He stepped back deciding it was best to let the smoke clear. He decided to spend the time gathering his things.

‘I only have three flares left,’ he thought, ’I better save at least one to start a fire. If I’m lucky this creeps ride has some useful supplies and maybe it’s still drivable.’

He touched his neck and found that the blood had dried which was a good thing. Kyle felt a little light headed. So he decided to sit on the ground and lean against the rock for support. One thing he discovered was a neatly folded nap sack that had been beneath his supplies in the box. Smiling, he began to pack things in it carefully.

‘Ok,’ he thought, ‘let’s go check this out and maybe roll that body away.’

As he walked past the corpse he gave it a nudge with his boot. Some bits flaked off and Kyle had to push back the bile he felt build up in his stomach. He felt really sure this guy wasn’t getting back up. Still, he suppressed a shudder.

Kyle braced himself to enter the vehicle. Carefully, he stepped inside knowing that it was slippery. Using his flashlight he surveyed the interior. This time he spotted a small refrigitor and opened it out of curiosity. Thinking it more water, he took a drink and quickly spit it out.

“What the hell?” he asked. “Jesus, its blood! This freak had a real life vampire fetish.”

Kyle’s heart sank as he flashed the light across the driver’s area. The controls looked simple enough but the foam caused a short in the old wiring. Apparently this thing was not used much and someone was working on it leaving access panels off. Cursing his luck, he decided to step back out for some fresh air.

‘Well,’ he thought, ‘this is just great. If I stay, someone else might show but if it’s another one like mister crispy I don’t want to be around.’

Kyle felt exhausted. He knew he needed sleep but had no where else to go. He knew he couldn’t sleep in the machine with the smell of smoke so he did the best he could. Using the cushion from the ejection seat he made a pillow then used the parachute to make a tent between the chair and rock. He curled up under his makeshift shelter and was surprised how quickly he fell asleep.

The sun was shinning bright as Kyle stood at the foot of his parent’s grave. Setting down the flowers in his hands he knelt on the fresh grave, tears welling up in his eyes. When he saw a shadow appear over his shoulder he didn’t bother to stand up or turn his head.

“So you finally bothered to show up,” Kyle said seething with rage.

“Look little brother,” John replied coolly,” I explained, I couldn’t get away from work. You would not believe the paper work I have to fill out for a leave of absence from the government lab-“

John never got to finish his sentence because Kyle stood and with one fluid motion punched him in the face, knocking him to the ground.

“I DON’T WANT YOUR EXCUSES YOU BASTURD! GET UP!” Kyle yelled.

Kyle waited, his fists balled up and ready. Instead of standing John laid there on the ground his back to his brother, body shaking. It took a few seconds for Kyle to realize that John was laughing.

“What’s so dam funny asshole?” Kyle asked confused.

John rose slowly and turned to face him, blood dripping from his lip, still chuckling.

“Oh man, I knew you were pissed that day,” John snickered. ”Originally you just stood, pushed pass me and told me to fuck off. Wow, I had no idea how much you hated me for not showing for the funeral. That temper of yours, you are going to need it. Stubborn as the day is long. That’s good. Remember when we were kids and building that tree house? A storm moved in just like this one but you were determined to finish putting on that roof despite the danger. I never told you this Kyle but I always admired your determination and fearlessness”

Dark clouds began to form matching the storm building in Kyle’s eyes. Somewhere in the graveyard lighting struck a tree and thunder shook the ground.

Kyle stepped closer with purpose in every movement.

“Really John? Another stupid fucking dream? That’s it, I’m ripping your dam head off-“

“We do not have time for this gentlemen.” A stern voice said.

Both turned and saw professor Marty standing by another grave. As the storm began to build, the wind picking up, Marty seemed to loose focus. It was almost as if he was a television picture that kept getting scrambled. Rain began to fall in a steady pattern.

“Listen up little brother we don’t have much time.” John yelled over the wind. “First you have been infected by a lethal virus from that thing that bit you. We are trying to fix it but the problem is when we tried it on that guy it killed him. We need time to be sure we can do it without killing you. I’ve downloaded some basic survivor knowledge to help you survive in the desert. Follow your instincts and the directions I gave you will lead you to a small valley with water. From there I gave you a map to the nearest city where there are some people who will help you. When you need to see it just close your eyes and think about it. I’m sorry Kyle, I did the best I could to save you. You’ve been asleep a long time.”

Kyle stood there, perplexed.

“You are cure. You must survive .” Marty tried to say.

“Time to wake up little brother!” John yelled over the noise.

Things went dark again for Kyle.
